Ants, roaches and fall invaders: find out which one before you spray

Short answer

Most ants and roaches in a Michigan home are a food, water and shelter problem before they are a spray problem, and the EPA's advice is to fix those first. The exceptions are carpenter ants, which point to moist wood, and a handful of fall invaders that are a nuisance and need sealing rather than treatment. Ask any company to name the insect before it names a plan.

What a good ant or roach visit looks like

The EPA starts with the insects' needs: pests need food, water and shelter, so seal food, clean up spills and remove water and shelter before using pesticides. It describes integrated pest management as the most economical means with the least possible hazard to people, property and the environment. A visit built on that starts with identification and an inspection for where the insects are coming from, and only then picks a product. Michigan's MCL 324.8313(12) bars an applicator from saying a treatment is necessary for a pest that is not present or likely to occur, which is the reason to ask for the insect, not just the price.

Ant and roach pricing: what we can show

Our estimate for ant or roach treatment in Michigan is $165 to $340 per treatment, or $670 to $1,350 when the infestation is severe. It is a model, not a quote: one published national range adjusted for what Michigan pest control workers are paid, and no Michigan company we looked at publishes a regular price. A one-time ant treatment and a recurring plan are different products, and a company that quotes the plan before it names the ant is selling the contract.

Under the estimate, the table holds the wage and the fees. Ask what the visit fee covers, whether a return visit is included, and what the company proposes to do about the moisture or the entry point.

How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Michigan's pest control worker median wage ratio to the US (0.98, BLS May 2025 data read through O*NET OnLine). The wage and state fee rows in the table are what pest control workers are paid and what the state charges to license them, and neither is a price. We have not collected quotes, and we found no Michigan pest control company that publishes a regular price. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.

Carpenter ants are a moisture clue

Penn State Extension, a Pennsylvania source, says carpenter ants seldom tunnel into dry sound wood but excavate moist, rotting wood for satellite nests, and that they are easily confused with termites and need different control. In Michigan the licensing category 7B names carpenter ants alongside termites, powder post beetles and wood-destroying fungi. If you find them, the question is not only how to kill them but where the wood is wet, and a company that fixes only the ants may be back. The carpenter ant and termite guide shows how to tell them apart, and the termite page covers the other half.

Insects that arrive in autumn and need sealing, not spraying

The Michigan Invasive Species Program says brown marmorated stink bug adults emerge in late April to early May and look for overwintering sites, including inside buildings, from September. The EPA says they do not bite people or animals and do not damage buildings. Extension services outside Michigan describe cluster flies and boxelder bugs the same way: Purdue says cluster flies seek winter sites from late August and September, Penn State says they do not reproduce indoors, and the University of Wisconsin says boxelder bugs enter through small gaps around windows, doors, pipes and foundation cracks, do not bite and can stain curtains and walls. All three sources name sealing as the best control. None of the three is a Michigan State University page, so treat the timing as other-state.

Cockroaches: what the general rules cover

The rule above, to deny food, water and shelter, is the one that applies to cockroaches, along with the EPA's warning that total release foggers can cause fire or explosion if misused and that you should leave the home and air it out afterward. If roaches are in a rental, tell the landlord first; MDHHS gives that advice for bed bugs. We can cite no Michigan government or EPA page on cockroaches, so this page makes no species or season claims about them.

Ants and roaches: urgent or not

Call right away
  • Nothing here needs a same-night call. If a large number of winged insects appear indoors, photograph them first: they may be ants or termites.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A line of ants at a spill or pet bowl.
  • Stink bugs, cluster flies or boxelder bugs on a sunny wall in fall.

What to try before you call

  1. Put the insect in a sealed container or photograph it next to a coin.
  2. Seal food, clean up spills and fix leaks that give water.
  3. Seal gaps around windows, doors, pipes and foundation cracks if the insect is a fall invader.
  4. If it is a carpenter ant, find the damp wood before the visit.
  5. Do not use an outdoor product indoors, and read every label.

License and rules for ant and roach work

MDARD's category list puts pests in or around human dwellings under 7A, and carpenter ants under 7B. Ask for the applicator's category and the company's business license number. Nothing we can cite in Michigan law requires a license for a homeowner using general-use products at their own home, and the product label is the instruction: the EPA says never to use an outdoor product indoors.

Ask for the company's state pesticide business license number and the applicator's name, and look both up with your state's pesticide regulator before any work starts.

Pest identification guide

Pick what you noticed and what you have checked. The guide names what that most likely is, using only the distinguishing features a government or university source gives, and says whether the sources point to a professional. It cannot identify a pest from a description with certainty, so treat the answer as where to look next. It runs in your browser and asks for nothing.

Questions people ask

How do I tell carpenter ants from termites?

Look at the wings and antennae. The EPA says ants swarm with front wings longer than hind wings and bent antennae, and termites have equal wings and straight antennae.

Do stink bugs in the house need treatment?

Not for health or building damage. The EPA says brown marmorated stink bugs do not bite people or animals nor damage buildings, though large numbers are a nuisance. The Michigan Invasive Species Program says they look for indoor overwintering sites from September.

Do cluster flies cause damage?

Not according to the extension sources we can cite: Penn State says they do not reproduce indoors, cause no structural damage and are not known to carry diseases of medical importance, and names sealing cracks and repairing screens as the best control. It is a Pennsylvania source.

What category of license covers carpenter ants in Michigan?

MDARD category 7B, wood destroying pest management, names carpenter ants. Household ants and roaches fall under 7A, general pest management.

How much does ant extermination cost in Michigan?

Our estimate is $165 to $340 per treatment, and $670 to $1,350 for a severe infestation. It is modeled from one published national range adjusted for what Michigan pest control workers are paid, so use it to check a written quote and not as one. Ask what the visit covers and whether a return is included.
