Licensing: who may apply pesticides for hire
Under Part 83 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) certifies and registers applicators and licenses the businesses they work for. Nobody may apply a pesticide for a commercial purpose or in the course of employment unless certified or registered, and only in the category held (MCL 324.8314). A certification costs $75 and a registration $45, both run three years and expire on December 31, and the Pesticide Application Business License costs $100 and expires every December 31. A registered applicator, the technician credential, cannot apply restricted use pesticides.
The categories are 7A general pest management, 7B wood destroying pests such as termites and carpenter ants, 7D vertebrate pests such as rats and mice, 7F outdoor mosquito management and a fumigation standard on top of a category. There is no category 7C. MDARD links a list of licensed businesses and the state license search; we have not run either. Cities cannot add their own pest-applicator licensing because MCL 324.8328 preempts it, though they may regulate posting and notification.
Check a licenseThe honesty rule: treatment must fit a pest that is there or likely
MCL 324.8313(12) says a licensed commercial applicator shall not represent that a pesticide application is necessary to control a pest if the pest is not present or likely to occur, and subsection (11) bars misrepresenting a treatment's characteristics, uses or benefits. The statute does not define "likely", so a fair company names the pest and the evidence. At each application MDARD's Regulation 637 requires the firm to give you its details, the applicator's name, the target pest, the active ingredients, the date and time and the label precautions.
MDARD takes complaints at 800-292-3939, and a violation of Part 83 can bring an administrative fine of up to $1,000 per violation. Two of our guides turn this into questions to ask: what a fair inspection says and what a company must give you.
What a fair inspection saysWildlife: DNR rules, not pesticide rules
A business removing nuisance wildlife for hire needs a free DNR Wildlife Damage and Nuisance Control Permit and may remove only listed species. DNR says it does not authorize or conduct live capture and release of raccoons, skunks, squirrels and opossums, so treat a promise of humane relocation as a question to ask rather than a standard service. Skunks may not be possessed, and a permittee may act any time in places closed to hunting or that bar firearm discharge, and otherwise April 1 to September 30.
Bats are the exception that carries a health clock. DNR treats a bat in a room with a sleeping, impaired or very young person, or any contact where a bite cannot be ruled out, as a potential rabies exposure to report to the local health department. DNR gives the bat maternity season as roughly mid-May through mid-August, with slightly different dates in two documents. City animal control often will not help: Ann Arbor's does not remove skunks or bats and Sterling Heights does not respond to skunk calls.
Attic animals and batsHealth and seasons: West Nile, ticks and bed bugs
MDHHS says West Nile outbreaks have occurred every summer since 2002 and that Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Kent counties have historically seen the most activity; Oakland County says risk is highest from late July through September. MDHHS's weekly report of October 16, 2026, which is provisional and overwritten weekly, lists 29 human West Nile cases, one EEE case in Roscommon County and 120 positive mosquito pools. Wayne County says the Asian tiger mosquito is new to Michigan and asks residents to report daytime biting to (734) 727-7400.
Blacklegged ticks, which carry Lyme disease, are active whenever outdoor temperatures are above 40 F, and MDHHS says they are established in the Upper Peninsula and the western Lower Peninsula and spreading. MDHHS identifies ticks from a photo or specimen at no charge. For bed bugs, MDHHS says only a live bug confirms them and that foggers do not work. The season calendar puts these dates in month order.
Mosquito and tick seasonHome sales: what Michigan does and does not require for termites
No source we can cite says Michigan requires a termite or wood-destroying insect inspection to sell a home, and we found no state form or separate inspector license. The Michigan seller disclosure statement asks about the history of infestation, and, under HUD's handbook, an FHA appraisal can require an inspection when the appraiser sees evidence or notice of infestation. The eastern subterranean termite is the species most often found in Michigan, according to a 1973 paper (we have only its abstract). No county termite map or Michigan swarm date is given here.

Questions about pest control in Michigan
Do pest control companies need a license in Michigan?
Yes: certified or registered applicators and a licensed business. MCL 324.8314 bars applying pesticides for hire without a credential, and the business needs a Pesticide Application Business License. Ask for both numbers.
Can a Michigan pest control company say I need treatment for a pest I do not have?
Not as a necessity claim. MCL 324.8313(12) bars representing that an application is necessary to control a pest that is not present or likely to occur. Ask the company to name the pest and the evidence.
Does Michigan allow wildlife to be relocated?
DNR says it does not authorize or conduct live capture and release of raccoons, skunks, squirrels and opossums, apart from permitted research. A DNR circular gives limits on relocating some animals, so ask a company which it follows.
Does Michigan require a termite inspection to sell a house?
No Michigan rule we can cite requires one. An FHA appraisal can require one when the appraiser sees evidence, and the seller disclosure asks about past infestations.
When is West Nile season in Michigan?
Risk is highest from late July through September, according to Oakland County's health division, and MDHHS says outbreaks have occurred every summer since 2002.
How much does pest control cost in Michigan?
It depends on the pest. Our estimates run from $105 to $195 per visit for a yard mosquito visit to $225 to $1,700 per treatment for termites, and each is a model, not a quote. They are built from published national cost ranges adjusted for what Michigan pest control workers are paid, and no Michigan company we looked at publishes a regular price. The cost table lists every service, and each service page lists what to ask a company about its price.
